CardsGrid
High Level Explanation
“CardsGrid” is a coop tactics card game that I am solo-developing. Much of the mechanical inspiration comes from D&D grid-based combat but instead of spell slots and dice players have cards and their decks represent their character’s build. Currently, all the art you see is wip and purely for prototyping. Like with any game project CardsGrid is the sum of many iterations where I make new things based on player feedback and toss things that aren’t working or aren’t right for the game.
Coop Specific Mechanics
CardsGrid is a coop-first-designed game. Co-op card games are few and far between so I’ve had to get creative with my problem-solving for things like UI and reasons for the players to coordinate with each other.
A recent example is getting additional energy for starting your turn near your coop alley. The gif below shows how both players are within each other’s light radius and the unit taking their turn gets +1 additional energy because of that.
An early prototype example of this is card rewards. Normally in modern deck builders players get card rewards at the end of the encounter but in CardsGrid players have the opportunity to get card rewards during the encounter if they work together with their coop partner. The clip below shows that if both players have hit an enemy unit before it dies then both players get a card rewarded to them.
