Project Summary
The Fortnite Block Party shorts showcased at E3 2019 were the first shorts we released for Fortnite using Epic’s virtual production pipeline. Immersive research and testing went into getting the technology of our game engine to work cohesively with motion capture and virtual cameras in order to create a proper virtual production film set. We later iterated on this technology to enable the LUX virtual production stage which was showcased at during Siggraph 2019– see the below video for a quick highlight.
Real-time technology is transforming the art of filmmaking, with next-generation virtual production tools coming to Unreal Engine. At SIGGRAPH, Epic Games partnered with Lux Machina, Magnopus, Profile Studios, Quixel, ARRI, and DP Matt Workman to demonstrate how LED walls can provide not only virtual environments but also lighting for real-world elements, so the entire scene can be captured in camera in a single pass.

We're continuing our cadence of highlighting improvements and workflows in 4.22. This week, Grayson Edge demonstrates how to use some Unreal Engine's virtual production tools.
